Tonale is one of the most famous skiing resorts in Trentino, offering organised lift systems and a wide range of accommodation. The Presena glacier and artificial snow systems guarantee snow-covered runs throughout the year. The lift systems are "first class" thanks to the many and modern automatic link chair-lifts seating 4 persons; it is undoubtedly an asset to be protected by plexiglass when it is snowing or windy! However the pistes are no less satisfying: the snow is maintained in perfect condition, covering flat pasture areas, steep slopes and the ice of the Presena mountain. In this last area it is possible to ski all year round and expert skiers are advised to try the Paradiso run. Good skiers should not miss the Alpino run or the piste down from the Passo dei Contrabbandieri. Winter sports began here with the construction of the giant ski jump, which in the 1930s was the first from which an Italian skier, Bruno Da Col, succeeded in exceeding the mythical length of 100 metres. Mussolini presented him with a gold medal. However, at that time there were still no ski lifts: the first was a chair-lift constructed in 1946, on the peak of Mount Aola, where there are still magnificent pistes, demanding but within the reach of all skiers. There are many hotels, some of which within Trentino and which can be reached from the Val di Sole. The slogan and boast of Tonale is that "there are no queues ", which is true, even on the busiest days. The flagship is the cablecar which reaches the Paradiso pass in only 5 minutes, with a rise of no less than 710 metres; the ski run down from the pass is remarkable in terms of incline and variety, while higher still there is the Presena glacier, equipped with a chair-lift and ski lift, with wide easy runs. The glacier is without crevices and it is possible to ski here in summer. Situated at an altitude of more than 1800 metres, between Trentino and Lombardia, Passo Tonale offers both summer and winter skiing at the foot of the Presena glacier, in the Commune of Vermiglio. At the pass there is also the great war memorial to the soldiers killed in the First World War, constructed in 1924, and the Hospice, with the small church of S. Bartolomeo. The Autonomous Province of Trento has established a Vocational Training Centre here for jobs relating to activities in the mountains. From the beginning of the 20th century pioneers of skiing were attracted to the area by the sunny valley and opportunities for skiing at Passo del Tonale and on the Adamello-Presanella mountains. Over the years this early calling for winter sports has been consolidated and Ponte di Legno is today the most important tourist resort in the valley. Tourism relating to sport is indeed favoured by the possibility of summer skiing on the Presena glacier. The town was reconstructed after destruction during the First World War. The most interesting building from the artistic point of view is the parish church, built in 1685 (the bell tower dates back to the 16th century); inside, the high altar with its altar piece offers magnificent wooden carvings, the work of G.B. Zotti and another artist belonging to the Ramus workshop.
IN WINTER
As far as downhill skiing is concerned, the Val di Sole offers more than 200 kilometres of downhill runs and 60 ski lifts. The valley has no less than 4 ski resorts: Folgarida, Marilleva, Peio and Passo Tonale. Natural snow is reliable thanks to the vicinity of the Ortles Cevedale mountains – one of the highest ranges in the eastern Alps, with no less than 23 peaks reaching an altitude of more than 3,500 metres - and guaranteed by major investment in artificial snow systems which today cover more than 90% of the skiing area. These are the statistics relating to winter sports in the Val di Sole. For those who prefer cross-country skiing, from Marilleva 900 it is possible to gain direct access to the cross-country tracks of Commezzadura. In the Val di Sole it is also possible to go in for alpine skiing.
IN SUMMER
The valley offers lovers of the mountains easy walks for beginners and the less fit and excursions at high altitude for the most expert, also accompanied by Alpine Guides. There are also numerous itineraries for mountain bikes. In the Val di Sole there is a cycle path which stretches for almost 50 Km, from Mostizzolo up to Fucine di Ossana and from here towards Vermiglio and Pejo. For most of the itinerary the path follows the course of the River Noce along old country tracks. On the valley floor we find all the villages lying close to the River Noce (one of the most interesting canoe routes in Italy, covering a distance of around 30 Km), where in summer it is possible to go canoeing, rafting, and jet skiing. At Passo del Tonale one can ski all year round at an altitude of 3000 metres on the Presena glacier, the reign of perennial snows.
