Monte Isola: Information
Where it is situated / geographic position:
This is the largest of the islands of Lake Iseo in the Region of Lombardy, which is made up of the localities of:
CARZANO
To the north east, opposite Sale Marasino, even today it is still a fishing town, closely embracing Palazzo Martinengo, built in '500 and mainly used as a hunting residence. The Baroque church of Saint John the Baptist, with its octagonal plan, is well worth a visit. Mount Isola is an uncontaminated oasis of greenery, where people (except residents) are not allowed to use private vehicles.

CURE
This is the highest hamlet on the Island. From here you climb up a path that takes you to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola.

MASSE
It is the oldest inhabited centre and the one that has best preserved its original urban system. The houses and courtyards are exceptionally beautiful.

MENZINO
Situated on the hillside, near the Oldofredi fortress, it was built as a look-out tower by the feudatories of Iseo in '400 and later became a noble residence under the Martinengo family.

NOVALE and OLZANO
Ancient villages in the north of the island that still preserve their deep-rooted agricultural tradition. Novale, which is made up of a small group of houses, overlooks Carzano like a balcony; it is connected to it by a path that carries on to Olzano. It developed in the Middle Ages, hidden by the island’s thriving vegetation; the houses are particularly characteristic for their architecture and building material (square ashlars of local stone (medolo) and round arches and raw wood). Even today because of the fishing trade, you can see fish hanging up to dry in the attics. The town is gathered around a bright little square. There is also an elegant home that was the summer residence of the bishop monsignor Marco Morosini (1645-1654).

PESCHIERA MARAGLIO
Once a town of fishermen and fishing net makers, it is the
first village you reach from the Sulzano pier, the port area of Peschiera is the island’s landing point with most traffic. The town spreads along the lake shore climbing up to the foot of the mountain; the houses, which are close together, branching out through the town connected by courtyards and paths, which are very similar to the weft of a filigreed jewel, where verandas and galleries or even simple small Romanic columns are the most precious parts.
Even today, fishing carried out using traditional methods, is an activity that is closely linked to the inhabitants, so much so that tourists will surely have the chance to admire the “arèle” (tables) along the lake where the typical fish of the lake, the aole, are hung to dry, with the chubs hanging on the snares.

SENSOLE
at the southwestern end of the island, it is situated on the side destined for cultivating extensive olive groves because of the favourable climate. It is famous for its trattorias, which specialize in fish dishes.

SENZANO
It rises in the hinterland of Mount Isola. The church of Saint Severino stands among the ancient houses, with frescoes attributed to Antonio Gandino, dating back to '600.

SINGHIGNANO
Along the road, which leads to Siviano from Menzino. It is a tiny centre with ancient houses.

SIVIANO
Where the Municipality is based. In Siviano you can also find the ruins of ancient medieval fortifications and the tower-house of the Martinengo family. The parish church of saints Faustino and Giovita built in 1745 overlooks the town. Again in Siviano, there is the sixteenth century Ferrara Villa near the little port.

How to get there by road:
By boat from Iseo and Sulzano to Peschiera Maraglio and from Sale Marasino to Carzano.
The Island is also linked from Lovere, Sarnico, Tavernola, but only in spring-summer.
